Farsi relates to the ‘Arabized’ equivalent for ‘Parsi’. Since there isn’t a p sound in Arabic language, the Arabs replaced /p/ of Parsi with /f/ once they invaded Iran. Parsi identifies Persia and means ‘of Persia’ or ‘of Iran’, the English version that is Persian, while ‘Farsi’ conveys no message about the background of Iran (generally known as Persia in history). On this regard, ‘Persian’ is the same as ‘Iranian’.

Today, the Iranians use the idea of Farsi for their language only. The English equal of ‘Farsi’ is ‘Persian’ (Like Deutsch and German). Iranians prefer Persian to Farsi since Persian is known for a broader meaning and could be used for all those Iran-related items (similar to Persian language, Persian cat, Persian rug / carpet, Persian literature, Persian Gulf, et cetera) while Farsi fails to do so.

To put it briefly, Persian language may be the official language in Iran. The Iranians call this language ‘Farsi’.
