What do you think of hiring a interior designer for a new house?
29.September, 2009
Just bought a house, find a bit lost at how to arrange and decorate. Thinking of going to professional designer. Has any one having used interior designer before?
You mean you are not broke after buying the house? Good for you. If you have a LOT of money left over that you want to dispose of, a decorator may be your thing. They can be reeeeaaal pricey. They also like to recommend very pricey materials and fixtures. However, some are capable if doing very nice things that will make coming home to your new place very pleasant. My only sage advice on the issue is to make sure that you and the designer are on the same wave length. Make sure you find one that is into making you comfortable with what you will have to live with when they are done. Picture this: Spending a bunch of money, the job is done, and a couple of weeks later realizing that you feel like you live in someone else’s house. Some designers like to exert their artistic flair and their own tastes a little too much.

i am a decorative painter and i work with several professional designers. yes i think its a good idea. make sure you understand how they will charge you…by the hour is most common, but sometimes if you buy something from them, they lower their rate or waive it altogether.
i feel its well worth the money, keep them on task though if you pay by the hour and have in your mind what exactly your problem areas are.
ps…using a decorator instead of a designer may save you some money, and they are usually quite qualified to help with the things you mentioned. designer have formal training including more structural/ architectural experience, so you will pay for that experience.
all the best
