I am a senior in high school thinking about going into graphic design while I attend UW-Madison and need to do research about the job I want to go into. I know all those career websites say AVERAGE salary, but I want an idea of how much one makes with a bachelor’s degree. If not a bachelor’s degree, how much with an associates? If anybody, especially graphic designers can help, please help me in trying to find my future. Thanks!

You’re going to have a hard time finding salary statistics for designers based on associates vs. bachelors degrees. My guess is probably that a study like that doesn’t exist. How much you earn as a designer rests on three things (more or less).

1. HOW GOOD YOU ARE. Talented designers are more in demand, and because of that, they have more bargaining power when it comes to salary and can expect to be paid more.

2. WHERE YOU WORK AND FOR WHOM. Because of the cost of living differences around the country, some areas pay higher salaries. This tends not to matter though because since the cost of living is so high in those areas, it all averages out. Also, who you work for makes a difference. Bigger companies and firms have more resources and con afford to pay higher wages than a small organization.

3. YOUR EXPERIENCE. The more years you have under your belt in the business, the more you know, and the more you know, the better you are……….the more you make.

Ultimately it’s your portfolio, not your degree that determines your pay. I know plenty of designers with BFAs that are plain bad designers. I also know unbelievably talented designers who are self taught. Employers know that a degree is no guarantee of a good designer, which is why they look at your work before deciding how much you’re worth to them.

Hope that helps.
Any other questions: mattymjb@yahoo.com

What is a computer server? I’ve heard about it used by lots of home businesses. Do game designers use it too? Or do I just need a computer with lots of hard drive space? Maybe even an external hard drive too if there isn’t enough space.

Uhh what are you wanting to do? Like more of the drawing or the programming in which case you need to learn some programming languages. You either need a powerful computer with some good software or a pencil.

This can be either your personal preference or a textbook answer.
Thanks in advanced!!

Serif, because it has been proven to be the most easy to read. When you use a lot of copy, it needs to be Serif.

Headlines are almost always Sans Serif, because they look much better bold or in caps.

How do they do it?

I would imagine they hire students looking to build portfolios, skilled amateurs, or even pros who are generous enough to do it cheap or for free. It is highly possible to have professional level images from non-pros and models assuming the designer also networks and/or has plenty of other creative-minded friends.

I tried asking once but I didn’t get the kinds of answers I need, so I’m going to take a different approach.

I have to write a report on a job that uses computers and I chose web designer.
This is a small paper, maybe a few paragraphs. It doesn’t need to be in great depth.

I just need a general idea of what web designers do and what training they need to do their job.

Sorry if this is too complicated, but here goes.

There are many kinds of web design and many aspects to each kind. Many, indeed most sites are commercial, and so a web designer needs to understand data management, security, and user experience. For these things a good grasp of XML, mySQL or any number of other data base disciplines will be what you need.

Of course the underlying code is html and any web designer should have a working knowledge of this and other similar mark-up languages.

Currently however there are many code editors that simplify the process of design, and the best of these would be Dreamweaver… and an understanding of Flash and Photoshop, even Illustrator will be useful to the designerin the management of web graphics.

These days the web is carrying more multi media, and an understanding of digital audio, video and various kinds of animation is necessary for the well rounded designer.

Now listen carefully to this next bit, it’s important. In the corporate world everybody’s job is broken into many people’s jobs. No one person
does all these things. Some people then choose to specialize, but this is a mistake. YYour specialty may become either obsolete or the job market in it saturated. It is important to approach this field from an unlazy position. Learn all of it… then you will always have a job. Overspecialize, and you will lose one way or another.

I can’t begin to tell you how important this is for you to understand if you are interested in this field.

Hi. When I put my resume on online i began hear from a lot of IT Recruiters. I guess conventional wisdom is that its better to make direct contact with an employer rather than go through a third party. Web designers, what are your thoughts on recruiters? In the end does it work out well for freelancers looking for work?

since they are usually paid by the employer, you should always have a few recruiters that know you. there is no risk for you. plus, if you give recruiters a referral, they sometimes give you a piece of their commission. freelancers can always find little projects through websites like guru.com
